Mixing Homogeneity

Any process where two or more components are being mixed.

Mixing homogeneity in battery manufacturing refers to how uniformly the various components of a mixture (like an electrode slurry) are distributed. For instance, in a cathode slurry, you have active material powder, binder, solvent, and conductive additives all mixed together. Homogeneity means that every part of that slurry has the same ratio of those ingredients, so when it’s coated, each section of the electrode has consistent composition. A common problem with poor mixing is agglomerations of active materials and conductive additive particles. Achieving good homogeneity involves optimizing mixing equipment operating parameters like shear rate and time, optimizing mixing steps such as how much of each component is added in each mixing step, selection or the appropriate binding agents and conductive additives, etc.

NOVONIX pays close attention to maintaining homogeneity when formulating electrodes in their research. They experiment with different mixing protocols to ensure that new materials (which might have different densities or particle shapes than standard ones) are evenly distributed. NOVONIX uses techniques like measuring viscosity and rheology, checking grind gauge results and making hand coatings to evaluate slurry homogeneity and stability. By ensuring good mixing homogeneity, NOVONIX helps maintain consistent quality in batteries, which translates to each cell performing reliably and similarly.
